FAQ

  • What is Sleuth?

Sleuth is a website that collects and shares the experiences of parents with their children’s health and development. This information is used to help parents of similar children find critical information, such as diagnostic pathways, daily tips and tricks, invaluable specialists, and resources. We know you have a lot on your plate and we want to help answer, “What’s next?”

We feel like it is critical to say (again!):

Our website and its contents are not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always seek the advice of your physician or qualified health provider with any questions you have regarding a medical condition.

  • What do you do with my information?

We use your information (i.e. data) to create a profile for your child. This information - if you choose to share it - is available for other website visitors to read. Your information may also be used to provide you with summaries of other parents’ answers (as well as summarize your advice to others), and be used to match your child with similar profiles.

If you choose not to share your information, it remains only visible to you. You still get to see profiles and analysis of children with visible profiles. We will never require you to share personally identifiable information.

Please email hello@hellosleuth.com anytime if you would like to remove data from our site. Of course, information you have shared publicly may remain somewhere outside Sleuth if someone has else has seen it.

  • What are my rights over my data?

    • You have the right to see, correct, change, and delete your data.

    • You have the right to request that we stop using your data.

    • You have the right to transparent communication about how we use your data.

    • You have the right to know if your data is stolen (of course!).

Please note that these rights may be restricted if/when they conflict with other people’s rights or various legal processes. Please also see our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy, but understand that we will do everything we can, within reason, to respect your preferences.

  • How does your technology help?

We maintain a map of the symptoms, diagnoses, and treatments that parents share with us. This helps with word representation and text classification, so that we can give you better results by analyzing how one child’s experience might be related to many others’ and how a child’s experience might be likely to evolve over time. We use statistics and artificial intelligence to provide parents with the best summaries of the data that we can. We also use standard open source software, like Elasticsearch, which is the same technology that enables search on platforms like Wikipedia.

  • Why are my answers not an exact fit for my child?

Our platform is limited by the number of parents who join us, and we’re just starting out. We know that even children with the same diagnosis, such as infantile spasms or a speech delay, have very different symptoms and needs. Our goal is to help find the information that is most useful to you. We will often have to refer you to professionals or other resources. We want to partner with top practitioners in the medical and therapeutic communities, not replace them.

  • Will you provide a list of recommended specialists and providers for my child?

Yes, this is one of our goals for the next phase. Once we have a critical mass of insights, we can analyze them to find the local providers that most parents love and trust.

  • Who are you?

You can read Alex and Sehreen’s profiles here. We live and work in Manhattan. Please contact us if you would like to join or if you have questions or advice.
