EmiliaMax’s Journey

Share the first part of EmiliaMax's story for readers on Sleuth! When and why did you start to feel concerned?

She was very late on everything: crawling, walking, talking. So we had her evaluated. The whole thing was horrible. The doctors questioned if I had abused her. They said she may never be able to be an independent adult. It was devastating and terrifying.

What was your experience, if any, seeking a diagnosis or treatment?

First we enrolled her in a special needs nursery with kids of all different challenges. It was amazing to put her in a place where she was "normal" and teachers understood her.

Do you have any other thoughts or advice you would like to share from this experience?

She's now 12 and ALMOST mainstreamed. She never will be fully mainstreamed (maybe? others disagree with me)... but what the doctors told me when she was 2 (will never be independent adult) to now (she's writing full essays, is super organized, has lots of friends -- she's an incredible kid) there is HOPE even when MEAN, EVIL DOCTORS SAY OTHERWISE.

We just learned that she's had DOUBLE VISION her whole life. We knew her eyes deviated, but we didn't know the extent it impacted her vision. How can you focus in school or read or do anything if a lot of the time you're seeing double? It was a huge discovery. There are specialist Optomitrists with degree: “Fellow of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development.” She did 2 months of weekly sessions and eye training 4 days a week and her double vision is gone. We are really excited.
