The score ranges from 2 (low physical ability) to 14 (high physical ability). We include how often your child gags, spits, or vomits and how you rated your child’s chewing (or sucking) abilities. This is a simplified concept. There are often psychological reasons for these “physical” responses.

Physical Ability

This score considers your child’s social behaviors during mealtime. This is the third of the four aspects of eating behavior we score separately.
The score ranges from 2 (easygoing behavior) to 14 (challenging behavior). This score reflects whether your child is fussy during eating, and whether you have to follow them or use distractions to get them to eat.

How does your child’s behavior affect you and the family? This is the last of the four aspects of easy/challenging eating behavior we look at separately.
The score ranges from 3 (negative effects on you or the family) to 21 (positive effects on you or the family). This includes how you feel about feeding times - are they easy or difficult in general - and how you feel like feeding your child affects family relationships.

Your “Overall Sleep Challenge” score reflects how well your child sleeps generally.
These 22 questions come from the Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire, which has been used in hundreds of studies of children’s sleep quality (references [1], [2], and [3]).
The minimum score for the version on Sleuth is 0 (your child probably sleeps easily and well!) to 36 (your child may have great difficulty sleeping). Scores tend to be low. Scores 8 to 10 or higher suggest that your child has some sleep difficulties.
You can use the bar chart to (very cautiously) see how you compare to other parents on Sleuth. This is a new survey, so you may want to check back as we get more responses!

Does your child fall asleep alone or in bed with parents or siblings?
Does your child cry or refuse to go to bed?

The score for Sleep Anxiety ranges from 0 (your child seems to have low sleep anxiety) to 6 (your child seems to have high sleep anxiety).
Sleep Anxiety considers three factors:
(1) Whether your child needs a parent in the room to fall asleep,
(2) Whether your child moves to someone else’s bed in the middle of the night, and
(3) Whether your child has a fear of the dark
Of course, these are just signs. Anxiety can be high or low even if you child has any (or none) of these behaviors.

Sleep Anxiety

This score and the next one consider whether your child is sleeping enough. The “Sleeps Too Little” score looks at whether your child wakes up very early or doesn’t get consistent sleep.
The minimum score is 0 (your child seems to sleep late enough and consistently) and the maximum score is 4 (your child seems to wake up too early and sleep inconsistently).

Daytime Sleepiness reflects whether your child wakes up independently and appears sleepy during the daytime.
The minimum score is 0 (your child does not seem sleepy during the day) and the maximum score is 6 (your child seems to be frequently sleepy in the daytime).

This score reflects the level of your positive mood in the past week. This includes feelings of excitement, enthusiasm, and inspiration.The score ranges from 0 (not at all positive) to 20 (very positive) with an average for most people of around 10.
We adapted these questions from the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) which has been used in thousands of psychology research studies.

Positive Mood

New parent “blues” and depression may affect more than 1 in 7 moms and dads ([1]). Too often, doctors and other family members don’t check on how parents are feeling.
These questions are adapted from the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale which has been studied with thousands of parents and translated to 20 languages. (source [2] below).
The score ranges from 0 (which suggests that you are in a positive or stable emotional state) to 30 (which suggests that you are likely to be feeling depressed or overwhelmed). According to scoring guidelines, if you score 12 or above, you may be experiencing blues or depression and may want to seek professional support (see [3] for details).
